OK so here we go.....
Like a lot of people in this forum I awoke one day with a new concept for a child's toy, normally after a few days the idea loses steam and I daydream elsewhere. But not this time. The idea has developed into drawings, flow schematics etc. I have carried out a patent search and currently the Attorney is drawing up a brief to file for patent.
The toy falls into the small low tech electronic area. But as I said it really is just a concept. I have no skills to allow the building of a prototype; however the tech involved is clearly global.
My question is; is it acceptable to take a presentation, without any working prototype, to Toy companies and expect any positive result or will they require a working prototype?
Has anyone managed a licensing deal from concept drawing only?
I would appreciate any help and advice out there in the minefield.
Thanks in advance,
Brightideer

Hi Brightideer, Welcome to the forums. The answer to you question is a big yes. It is possible to get your idea or invention manufactured and sold without a working prototype. Check out Roger Browns web site rogerbrown.net. Roger never spends more than $100 on an idea and he has licenses quite a few now. My advice would be to get a reasonable drawing or sell sheet done of you concept (DONE ). Some may say that a prototype is required but its not essential. A prototype just gives the reviewing party a better idea of if it can work taking away a bit of the work for them, a kind of proof of concept. I have learned to use various 3d design software packages to better relay the ideas I submit to toy companies. Once you get to the next stage we can recommend companies which you can approach. Some of these are listed on the site here. Another good step is to join linked in. I have access to hundreds of contacts from companies all over the world actively looking for new toy innovation. Good luck with you idea and hope it gets made! Please feel free to post away here on the forums and we will do the best we can to answer your questions and hopefully help you move along with your idea. Cheers, InvenToy.

Iven Toy,
Thanks for your reply. I will look at the sites you suggested. I am a member of Linkedin so will search that aswell.
As soon as the patent is filed (within the month) I will feel more secure in pitching my idea. My thoughts are to outsource the presentation design and prodution to my employers Graphics dept. (using a NDA) then start the task of trying to get my foot in the door.
I have also a preferance for a Brand name; so do you think it is wise to TM it and own the associated domain names. It shouldn't be a great expense and I think enhances the package.
As before thankyou in advance.

I found this site by doing research for a project I am working on, and I thought I'd ad my two cents. I am an Industrial Designer specializing in new concepts and 3D visualization. I am working with inventors to create illustrations of their designs, and I find that most of them have a vague idea of the concept, but have a very difficult time showing it. This is where my expertise come in. I talk with the inventor, take a look at their drawings etc, and create a series of illustrations for the object. I typically sign a non-disclosure agreement, so I can't show many of my projects by you can get an idea of my work by taking a look at the projects I can show you here: shownd.com/zsoltCheers, Zsolt

Ok.... a month has been and gone, I am still waiting to file the Patent. The draft is now with me so shouldn't be too long.
In that time I have been able to have a think about TM and websites. I now believe it isn't worth it as it would cost a ridiculous fortune to protect globally just one name, let alone anything that's similar. That goes to for the domain names.
I have now thought more of going to some of the larger retailers and asking for their feed back and also running some small local focus groups using my local school and a couple of Market Research friends of mine as I think this may help with the over all pitch.
All I have to do now is get this patent filed!!!
Zsolt,
Your art work looks very impressive and certainly would help with visualising my concepts. More so to the children during Market Research.

Zsolt, Have you done any toy designs in 3D to date, your own or for others?
