This is probably one of the most common questions I have been asked by newbie toy inventors. Here is a quick step toy inventors guide of the stages of invention:
(1) Write it down - get a notebook and write the idea down. If you think of different ideas write these down too. (2) Sketch it - No matter how good you are drawing try and sketch it, even just in pencil. (3) Protecting your idea - one simple way is to put the copies of your notes and drawings in an envelope and send it to yourself (post it). Make sure your sign and date pages. Don't open the envelope. This is a basic way to get proof of date of conception. After this you have a number of choices including prototypes, patents, licensing and more. These are covered in more detail in the invention topic section.
