Evaluation of your idea

If you have submitted an idea to a company be it a working prototype or just design or paper how long is reasonable for evaluation of an idea by a company before you take it to show someone else. My personal experience over the last few years is that companies want between 1 and 2 months before they make a decision. Is this reasonable or should it be more or less?
