Have you been successful in licensing a toy or board game invention? If so let us know what sort of percentage royalty to expect and also if advance payments are the norm?
Cheers,
Inventoy.

Have you been successful in licensing a toy or board game invention? If so let us know what sort of percentage royalty to expect and also if advance payments are the norm? Cheers, Inventoy. In the UK we usually get 4 to 5% of net sales, if it's dual license (say a Simpson's product) then this tends to drop to 2 to 3% as the manufactures has to pay two license costs. In the US we have got up to 6%. We always ask for advances, as there is some chance of your concept just being sat on for a couple of years if you don't. When a manufacturer pays advances (to my logic) it is showing a commitment and they are not just holding on to your concept. Another clause we sometimes add is a second advance payment if the royalties have not accrued to a certain figure on the license agreement by a certain date. toy agents and toy inventors are for the middle class and the rich , they are the only ones who buy off the companies to make their invention or inventions, beware of the scams and scammers and their toy agents and companies there all for the money and rich schemes after your money and then they come up with the lies why the invention can not be made or souled ,invented and no market for the invention or some kind of 2 minded talk garbage , the toy companies are all scams and scammers ,con- arts and their toy agents and their big or small companies online and offline they want the money and then they laugh at you and think it is a joke reaping off people and they get rich. and steal people ideas . beware of them all bunch of liars and scams ....and money thieves .... new funtiers .com is one of them , $100.00 up front and draws or cd and then they suppostly look in to the invention make shore nothing is like it on the market and patiented, and can license the invention etc.... bunch of lies , they do nothing ,and take your money .... and may even steal the invention for themselves . bunch of thieves and scammmers and liars. do not give any one any money , they are all thieves....ps better to invent your own ideal and make it and sell it yourself ,because the thieves are everywhere nowadays.

Hiya - hope all is well. Just wondering (if this thread is still viewed?) if there is an update on licensing % today? I had decided to license as I have a family and need to work, but having done the numbers - not sure its worth it. I am capable of taking this to market myself if I can find a mentor/investor but its daunting to say the least. Would be proud of the achievement though...thank you

Most royalties range from 3% to 8% of wholesale price, not retail price you see in store.

Thank you Rogerbrown - seems like a hard way to make meaningful money.

You can make a good living off royalties as long as they have good distribution. And I am always looking for my next license so when one dies down the other picks up.

hi - me again. I had originally decided to licence and then didn't feel that i would be making meaningful money this way. I am still unclear how much I would be selling myself short by not getting investment and taking to market myself, whilst i am resourceful and hardworking this seems a mountain to climb. Have you done both? Or even considered it? I just have questions all day long about all aspects of what i think needs doing - need a mentor that I can just bounce all my questions off.

You might want to read this article i wrote on the topic. Not every inventor is built to run a business. You need to look at both realistically to make an informed decision. rogerbrown.net/licensing-vs-manufacturing/
